Science
Our 4th grade science will use Discovery Education as the main curriculum. This is an online techbook that utilizes videos, hands-on labs, reading passages, and interactive activities. In addition, Mr. Lorsung (Science Specialist) will use a combination of hands-on lab experiments and Science Weekly magazines to help your child hypothesize, make observations, and collect data about the world around them. The following science units will be taught in the regular classroom throughout the year:
Magnetism and Electricity: With the help of a grant from the Pine City Elementary PTO, 4th grade purchased a FOSS (Full Option Science System) kit to help teach students about magnetism and electricity. Students participate in daily hands-on activities, exploring magnets and building circuits, to discover the properties of magnetism and electricity.
Water Cycle: Students will explore the sources of water on Earth, how water changes from one form to another, and how humans use water as a resource. As part of this unit, students will be required to complete a water cycle project, in which they display with words and pictures the parts of the water cycle.
States of Matter: In this unit, students will explore the properties of matter and how matter changes from one state to another. They will get experience working with tools to measure objects, as well as classify objects such as liquids, solids, and gases.
Rocks and Minerals: Through hands-on exploration, students will describe the differences between minerals and rocks, identify minerals based on their properties, and sort and classify rocks into the three major rock types; igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. They will also describe how the rock cycle works.
Disease Prevention: Over the course of this unit, students will identify types of diseases--hereditary, communicable, and non-communicable--and describe how the human body naturally protects against and fights diseases. Students will also explore ways to prevent disease, including antibiotics and vaccinations.
